What is Autism Awareness Month?
The month of April is Autism Awareness Month, and it is meant to inform people about autism. For those who don’t know, autism is a neurodivergent condition, meaning somebody’s brain is wired differently. When somebody is autistic, they may think and act differently than most. Many people know about the condition, but they don’t truly understand it. When we asked Ms. Green about autism, she said “They can be some of the best friends you could ever have, but they do take a lot of understanding.”

About Autism
People who are autistic are not all the same, partly because there are different severities of the autism spectrum, and partly because they are individual people. Many of them are talented at something, like art or math. For instance, many people who have had a great impact on the world were on the autism spectrum, such as Albert Einstein, Charles Darwin, and Isaac Newton. However, this does not mean that they don’t have any challenges. Several autistic people struggle with things like communication and change, and they might display emotions differently than neurotypical people. For instance, some might start reciting ads when they are nervous. Being autistic is not somebody’s whole identity, it’s only part of who they are.
