Over the weekend of April 11-13, Ms. Heckle and Mrs. Richardson took 29 8th graders on a trip to Pigeon Key, Florida. Students participated in a snorkeling trip on a 35 ft catamaran, tide pooling, learning the history of Pigeon Key, shark dissection, feeding sharks, island stewardship competition, and direct instruction lessons on shark biology, reef fish identification, and ocean pollution. They also enjoyed some free time games, including uno-ball, manhunt, and took a walk on the 7-mile bridge. A great time was had by all.

Mr. Thomas, a swim instructor, teaches the 8th graders about marine life in the ocean, specifically in the Florida Keys. “I feel like he really taught me things I could use in the future, like knowing what type of fish are dangerous and when I should get out of the water, due to intensity of the waves,” said Gustavo.
